Foursquare splits its app into two, Announces a new app called Swarm

Foursquare is going beyond check-ins.

Since its inception, Foursquare has always been our go-to-app for discovering great places to hang out. Eventually, the social network expanded into checking out where your friends are at a specific time. Hence, Foursquare is basically offering two services.

Today, the location-based company is splitting up its application into two – Foursquare, the location-based app, and a new app called Swarn that will help users find nearby friends.

By doing so, Foursquare is going beyong check-ins. The Foursquare app will no longer support check-ins. Instead, it will focus on local search and discovery.

“We believe local search should be personalized to your tastes and informed by the people you trust. The opinions of actual experts should matter, not just strangers. An app should be able answer questions like ‘give me a great date dinner spot’ and not just ‘tell me the nearest gas station,” the company said in a blog post.

Meanwhile, Swarm, which will be made available on iOS and Android in the coming weeks, will let users find nearby friends faster and more easily than the current Foursquare app.

“We built Swarm because you’ve told us how often you still have to text your friends: “where are you?” and “what you up to later?” We wanted to build a quick way for you to know these two things for all of your friends,” Fourquare added.
