The French Open 2014 displayed some surprising results. Roger Federer and Serena Williams came out on top in the end while Venus Williams also reached in the 2nd round.

Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Venus Williams reached in second round of French Open 2014. Roger Federer took his chances on the clay court and after defeating Lukas Lacko returned home for filial piety’s sake.

Serena Williams meanwhile took her time and along with her sister Venus Williams (who reached the second round) claimed the top spot.

Federer fought swiftly and with serenity against his opponent as his wife and two daughters looked on from within the safety of the crowd. Federer admits that he felt a bit of nervousness before the start of the match but later on it disappeared.

“I wasn’t nervous actually going into the match,” said Federer. “It’s more just like those hints of fear, maybe yesterday, maybe this morning at one point, just for like five seconds ‘Oh, I really hope I don’t have to pack my bags today’, that kind of feeling.”

His results last year were dismal. Yet this year he has shown the world that he is king. Federer’s wife gave birth to twin boys recently. So his happiness knows no bounds.

Serena Williams did not get off to a good start but she picked up speed later on. Soon she was sending the tennis ball smashing back in all sorts of backhand volleys and straight shooter slams.

She won the game in the end. Serena has a way of making your heart go into shock when you think she is about to lose. But at the last moment she picks you up into optimism and allows you a glimpse into the reason she is a superstar.

And her sis, Venus Williams was at it too in her own right as a force to be reckoned with. She showed her opponent Bencic that she alone was the rightful winner.

“I’m trying to focus – I’ve not played a lot in the last couple of months so I have to try to focus,” said Venus who could meet Serena in the third round. “It was definitely good to try and get some rhythm.”

Venus spoke of how she had issues with concentration and focus. It was a match that raised hopes and set hearts aflutter with competitive thrill and delight.

“I can’t wait for the Olympics two years away,” Venus Williams said. “My goal is to stay healthy enough, and, God willing, stay alive and be at the Olympics.”
