- Gina Rodriguez is all set to work hard for her new sitcom that is set to premiere on the CW Network titled ‘Jane the Virgin’. It is a Latino based family comedy that the actress and the network are hopeful would work.
The CW network has been the home of genre based fictional series such as The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Arrow and their most recent addition, Flash. The network was following a trend that was perhaps too fictional. That is what the CEO of the CW said that the network might be going down a fictional lane and people don’t actually like to see fiction all the time.
They have other channels to provide that for them. Since the end of shows like Gossip Girl, there have been a few shows that were actually about the real world and human characters that were not superheroes. The network went ahead to re-think strategy and picked ‘Jane the Virgin’ to break the long going fictional tradition,
For the series to work, CW needed a strong lead actress and that is where Gina Rodriguez enters the scene. Gina has already acted in The Bold and the Beautiful and Army Wives. She has an acclaimed performance in the movie Filly Brown in which she played the role of an aspiring hip hop artist.
She turned down an offer to work in Eva Longoria’s Latino based series ‘Devious Maids’ admitting that as much as she loved everyone on the show, she was not comfortable doing a character in the show with maids. She said there are more stories to be told out there. Jane the Virgin is a Latino based comedy in which Gina’s character Jane is celibate because of the strict management of her grandmother.
She finds out that she is pregnant. Now she must figure it out with her confused fiancé played by Brett Dier and the challenges of living in a Latino family. It is not stereotypical, Gina confirms but coming from the same people who gave us Ugly Betty, we expect all the Latino fun to be there.
Gina is a very talented actress. She started performing when she was only seven and realized she wanted to be an actor. Gina says that she is not self-made and she had her parents’ full support in becoming what she is today. She says her ambitions have led her far but she has also learned from other actresses before her that ego will kill her career.
She has high hopes for Jane the Virgin to work. We hope that the series is successful and we get to see more of Gina who has an easy-going charm, glowing confidence and a good-natured smile. Many are comparing the 29 years old actress to Oprah Winfrey.
The characters in the show are Jane Villanueva played by Gina Rodriguez, her fiancé Michael played by Brad Dier. Jane’s grandmother Alba will be played by Ivonne Coll and Andrea Navedo will be Jane’s mother Xiomara. The show will premiere tonight on CW network after a summer of buzz about the show.
