‘Girls’ creator Lena Dunham talks about Feminism, Sex and Politics

The star of ‘Girls’ Lena Dunham talked about Feminism, Character driven sex and politics at the Paley Fest. Dunham answered everything especially all her online critics.

This time at Hollywood’s annual PaleyFest we had the opportunity to hear the stars and executive producers of HBO’s ‘Girls’. This Sunday afternoon at the Dolby Theater, creator of the ‘Girls’ Lena Dunham addressed everything from her online critics to the show’s controversial sex scenes. The questions were moderated by executive producer Judd Apatow who didn’t shy away from asking Dunham about her politics and the series.

Dunham stated that she has even stopped looking at her Twitter. She explained that she sends tweets to someone and then she posts them for her. Dunham stated that all the criticism became a little too much for her and that she is affected by some things such as violence and threats of rape.

Dunham and her show receive a lot of criticism and that clearly has an impact. Even the producers are aware of this fact and it is the only reason why they created the character of Ray which is played by (Alex Karpovsky). According to Apatow the character of Ray is the voice of other people’s interpretation of how ridiculous the behavior of the girls was.

Moreover Dunham also stated that they are so engrossed in creating the series that they do not pay much attention to outside opinions. She said that whether they receive praise or criticism they are together as a team and continue to tell stories about these characters. She explained that they all encourage each other to continue on and work harder.

Lastly she also said that if they became too interested in what people say over the internet then that would be very bad for the show and the whole team. Lena Dunham will also been seen in a guest appearance in ABC’s ‘Scandal’. However Dunham did not tell anyone about the role that she would be playing but she did say that going on to a different set is very exciting for her.  

‘Girls’ is very much based on sex and so it didn’t take long before the conversation turned to the more controversial sex scenes of the show, especially Marnie’s sex life. Dunham praised Williams and stated that she never says no to anything and she just asks great questions that helps make it better. One of the most talked about scene this season came in the premiere with Desi performing a particularly explicit sex act on Marnie.

Dunham further talked about the show explaining that the main responsibility of the show is to show women that are fully realized and don’t always have to be likable. Dunham also stated her future plans about the future seasons and said that she wants to make all the characters and take the girls to the next phase of their life. She explained that working at HBO is amazing as they are allowed to let these characters to develop and change.
