Google will release thousands of internet balloons across the world.

Google has launched a particularly strange plan to get better internet coverage around the world: send out weather balloons that will act as WiFi hotspots. Project Loon isn’t just a pretty balloon, however. There is a massive global infrastructure that must be built to track, redirect and eventually retrieve the floating hotspots.

Google has just released a new video that explains and shows how the project works.

“If you look at the system today it’s amazing how much more advanced it is,” says project leader Mike Cassidy in the video above. “The technology is working. We’re getting close to the point where we can bring the Internet to people around the world.”

Currently, there have been promising test runs over New Zealand, but they do need to expand. Part of their problems will include weather and global warming. Serving entire regions will take thousands of balloons and thousands of workers.

This is a huge chance to offer worldwide employment. Google will be releasing more news soon.
