From now on people will be able to see NFL highlight clips on YouTube as well as in Google search results.
Finally the NFL and Google have struck a deal. The deal will provide NFL highlight clips on Google’s YouTube. So from this week fans will be able to watch the official NFL highlight clips on Google’s YouTube as well as in Google search results.
Google will from now on also provide detailed information about games and scores which will include the kick off times as well as the networks that will be airing the games through its ‘OneBox’ results format. The ‘OneBox’ is used by Google to show off extended answers to search queries instead of simple links.
The NFL has also stated that Google will now sell ads against the leagues information and clips and will share the revenue that will be collected with the NFL. The deal between the both also calls for Google to promote the NFL on YouTube and in other places.
This deal is definitely going to make both the parties a lot of revenue and NFL could even experience more viewers. However the NFL still wants its fans to watch its games on the TV networks that have paid a lot of money to show those games and that is why the main idea of the pact is to turn the viewer’s towards the NFL’s TV partners or its very own website. Although NFL will give Google some of the in-game clips to show and this will start with Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Talking about the deal, it is no surprise at all. As many of you would know that YouTube already has deals with pro basketball, baseball and hockey and so the NFL wanted to be a part of it too. Plus NFL has already struck deals with the social networking sites, Twitter and Facebook, so how could they leave out Google and Google’s YouTube.
Then again Google has also done something like this with ESPN last year during the World Cup. Here Google provided the fans with all the details about the games in its search results and tried to turn the attention of the viewers to ESPN or ESPN’s website for watching the matches.
Well some of the NFL fans would also remember that there was going to be a deal between Google and NFL some years ago for showing the actual NFL games on YouTube. Well this is not going to happen in the near future so do not have your hopes high.
Then last year we also saw NFL striking a deal with DirecTV for its ‘Sunday Ticket’ package. This means nearly all of its rights packages have been locked up in long term TV deals. So this new deal with Google will definitely provide the NGL fans with all the details they want to know from wherever they want to while the deal will also increase revenues for NFL and Google.
