Last Holiday season 4k Ultra HDTV went on sale for the first time and some UHD TVs have been bargain deals on Black Friday. Problem is that most current UHD TVs are not future proof.

We are again in a new era of TV technology. Again the technology is available but not the content. It has been the same story for HD, 3D and now for 4K Ultra HD. 4K Ultra HD offers a tremendous resolution upgrade from 1,920×1,080px to 3,840×2,160px. This sounds awesome and also looks awesome when 4k content is available.

The 4k content situation looks a little better this year with Netflix offering 4k streaming on select shows. The problems are though in the details. To be able to use the Netflix 4k streaming you need a TV with HEVC codec.

The second big issue is HDMI 2.0. If you want to have a future proof 4k UHD TV you need HDMI 2.0 ports. The first TVs with HDMI 2.0 are just arriving. The LG UB9500 and UB8500 4K Ultra HD series have these ports as well as the new Panasonic X940 and AX900 series. These new Panasonic 4k Ultra HD TVs also offer a Displayport, which is perfect for consumers who want to connect a computer to the set and enjoy 4k UHD at 60Hz.

Here is the issue with old HDMI ports. If you do not have a 4K UHD TV with an HDMI 2.0 port you can only watch at 30Hz. Samsung offers an $400 upgrade box called Samsung One Connect Box to bring HDMI 2.0 to current models, but this is a pricy solution.

Third problem to watch out for on current 4K UHD TVs is upscaling. The bargain priced 4K UHD TVs lack a built-in upscaling engine or only provide low quality.

I have read through many discussions forums where early adopters discuss their 4K UHD TV experience. There are lots of troubles in getting these thing do what they are made for – display 4k content that looks better than HD.

I recommend to avoid 4K UHD again this year. Rather look for a higher end HDTV that excels in display quality and Smart TV features. If you absolutely want 4K Ultra HD TV then the LG UB9500 or LG UB8500 are great choices as these TVs have HDMI 2.0 and the HEVC cofor Netflix.
