ABI’s Teardowns Market Research effort reveals the compact sized processor with much detail
Teardown enthusiasts, including iFixit, have already gotten down to the core of the Apple Watch. And thanks to these revelations, we have had our fair share of the innards including the famous Taptic Engine, Digital Crown along with the battery. However, something important had still gone missing from our knowledge and it was the custom designed S1 chip – the central functional component of the Apple Watch. ABI Research has taken the pains to dig down further and reveal more details on the chip.
ABI’s Teardowns Market Research effort has revealed all the chip’s components including the WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC radios. Their findings also include a picture which shows the 512 MB of RAM sourced from Elpida, 8GB of flash storage sourced from SanDisk/Toshiba, and the integrated accelerometer/gyroscope sensor.
The real deal in the S1 chip is in the APL 0778 (Apple’s processor) and this main processor is just a teeny tiny part of the already compacted system. According to Apple, the S1 chip is basically “an entire computer system on a single chip” which has been housed so securely for ensuring its durability. The watch’s IPX7 water-resistance rating is one other reason why the chip has been hidden away. The water resistance promise was tested on the launch day when after being submerged in water for a good 15 minutes, the watch was functioning perfectly fine.
