iOS 8 adoption rate crosses 80 percent

iOS 8 adoption was badly hurt from all the point updates brought to fix problems and introduce newer features

Within seven months of its official release, the iOS 8 version has crossed a milestone with its 81 percent adoption rate. The latest Apple OS is running on more than 80 percent of active Apple devices as confirmed by Apple’s App Store Distribution data which also shows Apple going up two percentage points since the last two weeks. Majority of the iOS 8 adoption has come as a result of upgrading from the iOS 7 which still remains on the 17 percent remaining devices and only 2 percent devices are running on iOS version 6 or older.

According to MixPanel’s data from last year, iOS 7 has done better than iOS 8 in terms of adoption and it had enjoyed massive adoption at around 91%. For this year, their date shows iOS 8 adoption only slightly more than what Apple has deduced.

The reason for the slower adoption of the iOS 8 might be attributed to the fact that Apple had been releasing point updates for iOS 8 to bring improvements, new features/apps and fix older problems. Right after iOS 8’s release, the adoption was hurt particularly by the issue when over-the-air updates required less internal storage space.

However, the iOS 8 is going pretty strong on the features as Apple Pay comes to both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus along with iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2 for iOS 8.1. The Apple Watch app is also coming with iOS 8.2 and Apple’s newly announced introduction of over 300 new emoji characters with iOS 8.3 has been met with a lot of excitement.
