Johnny Depp is to appear in the film Mortdecai which is about an art dealer of loose morals. The trailer has arrived and can be viewed.

Nothing is good or evil. Thinking makes it so! Such is the theme of the new movie Mortdecai starring the inimitable and illustrious Johnny Depp

Among the oddball Englishmen this actor has played /4/be included Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean and the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland

Finally, his latest version is as an immoralist art dealer in Mortdecai. Johnny Depp plays a conniving and scheming Machiavellian art connoisseur who has all the makings of a gangster.

The story revolves around Mortdecai (as his name is in the film) going here and there and everywhere in order to recover a purloined painting which has in it hidden a sign that points to a bank account containing gold. And get this…the gold was put there by Nazis!

Mortdecai has a handlebar moustache and is shown arriving in Los Angeles (the City of Angels…now that is a contrast). He takes part in ten thousand games of the rich and famous.

Ewan McGregor and Paul Bettany play their respective roles as an inspector and manservant. Based on the novels by by Kyril Bonfiglioli, specifically The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery that was finished by the Craig Brown in 1999 after Bonfiglioli’s death in 1985, the movie is an action comedy and it will be thrilling and filling in equal measures.

According to the Guardian, “the trailer shows a luxuriously moustached Depp travelling to Los Angeles, described as ‘a terribly vulgar place’ and taking part in traditional aristocratic pastimes such as shooting peasants (no typo). Ewan McGregor plays Inspector Martland, who coaxes Mortdecai to help with the investigation in return for turning a blind eye to his civic debts.

Paul Bettany plays unfortunately named manservant Jock Strapp, the Jeeves to Mortdecai’s Wooster. Other roles are unclear: both Magic Mike’s Olivia Munn and Gwyneth Paltrow could be Charlie’s ‘impossibly leggy’ wife from the novels.”

The trilogy by the author which came out in 1999 has been rightly adapted to a celluloid medium. Johnny Depp is his usual adept and creative self.

Johnny Depp performs his role of a man without moral scruples with perfection and poise not to mention personality. He has been having some trouble with his films at the box office of late.

After Pirates of the Caribbean, things came to a halt for the otherwise successful actor, so he has given it his all in this movie.

All he can do for now is to wait and see whether it flies or bombs in the real world of popcorn buckets and movie audiences. Whether Mortdecai is a winning combination or goes into loss will determine his future in Hollywood.
