Julian Assange lands Victory as Swedish Prosecuters offer to Visit him in London

Today news broke that the Swedish prosecutors will interview Julian Assange in his exile in the Ecuadorean embassy.

There is movement in the Julian Assange case. The Swedish prosecutors will travel to London and interview Julian Assange in his exile in the Ecuadorean embassy. The Wikileaks’ founder has been asking for this for four years. His lawyer said in a phone interview with the BBC that this is a great victory for Assange.

One of the reason why the Swedish prosecutor changed its mind is that potentional charges are expire under the statue of limitations in August. Lead prosecutor Marianne Ny said in a statement. “My view has always been that to perform an interview with him at the Ecuadorean embassy in London would lower the quality of the interview, and that he would need to be present in Sweden in any case should there be a trial in the future. Now that time is of the essence, I have viewed it therefore necessary to accept such deficiencies in the investigation and likewise take the risk that the interview does not move the case forward.”

Julian Assange is wanted in Sweden for sexual assault allegations. According to Wikipedia he is accused of unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation, and one count of lesser-degree rape. He denies the claims and sees in the whole case against him a way to get him into the hands of the United States government.

If Assange is successful in convincing the Swedish prosecutors that he is innocent, he could leave the Ecuadorean embassy in London where he stays since 2012. The Swedish prosecutor interview is though not a done deal yet. Sweden requires approval from the UK and Ecuador that the interview can take place.

43-year-old Julian Assange is under investigation by US authorities since Wikileaks published the documents leaked by Chelsea Manning back in 2010. Assange and others started Wikileaks in 2006.
