Marvel Comics has introduced a totally new female Thor character in its series. This is cause for celebration among those with a feminist bent of mind.
Will the real female Thor character please step forward? This time Marvel Comics has really done something good. Concentrating on the need for more strong and fearless female role models in comics and the entertainment industry, it has given a God’s status to a Goddess instead.
Yes, you heard right, the hammer-wielding pagan deity has transformed from a “He” to a “She”. The “lucky lady” was a well-guarded secret as far as her identity was concerned up until now that is.
But now in the eighth issue, Dr Jane Foster is added to the ranks as the character of Thor. She happens to be an ex-girlfriend of the main man of the comic. And she has her own demons in the form of a terminal illness. About six years ago, a female Thor was announced.
Today the drop scene has come for this poignant player in the series. Natalie Portman plays the female Thor character in the movie version of this pictorial/textual layout. For behind every superhero lies a super-heroine.
