Movies to Watch Out at 2015 Cannes Film Festival

Several films including The Sea of Trees, Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road will be showcased at the Cannes film festival

The 68th Cannes Film Festival is all set to begin in France. The filmmakers from all over the world are heading towards Cannes city to showcase their projects. Dozens of films including feature, indie and documentaries will be presented in the festival, from 13 to 24 May. Some of the most hotly-anticipated movies of this year’s Cannes Film Festival are:

A Tale of Love and Darkness

Actress Natalie Portman is making her debut as a director with A Tale of Love and Darkness. The film is an adaptation to the autobiographical novel of the same name written by Israeli journalist Amos Oz, who has been a strong advocate of two-state solution to the conflict between Palestine and Israel. In the fim, Natalie Portman has played the role of Fania Oz, the mother of Amos Oz.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth installment of Mad Max franchise and the first one without Mel Gibson. The latest Mad Max film features actor Tom Hardy in the title role. It also stars Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult as Imperator Furiosa and Nux respectively. Although Tom Hardy is an acclaimed actor but it would be interesting to see whether he is able to justify his selection as the lead character of Max Rockatansky.

Carol

Based on the Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt”, Carol is the first feature film of director Todd Haynes after a long gap. His last film “I’m Not There” was released in 2007. The film took place in 1950s New York and depicts the story of a young female department store clerk who falls for an older-married woman. The film features Rooney Mara and Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett in the lead roles.

The Sea of Trees

Back in 2003, director Gus Van Sant went on to win “Golden Palm” at Cannes for his film “Elephant”. Now he is returning to the festival with “The Sea of Trees”, a film revolving around a depressed man Arthur Brennan who travels to Mount Fuji in Japan to kill himself but finds another guy and decides to live and survive. The character of Arthur Brennan is played by Mathew MaConaughey. Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts also made their appearance in the film.

Amy

Amy is a documentary about late singer Amy Winehouse who died in July 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. The family of Amy Winehouse already declares the documentary “unbalanced” and “misleading” and they have decided to distant themselves from this controversial project. The documentary is directed by Asif Kapadia who has won BAFTA for his documentary “Senna” about late Formula One driver Ayrton Senna.
