Melissa McCarthy’s Spy Likely to Top Weekend Box Office with $30 Plus Opening

“Insidious: Chapter 3” and “Entourage” are following with an estimated $25 and $20 million respectively

Comedy film “Spy” is heading for a $30 to $35 million opening weekend and is likely to take the top spot at this week’s box office, according to initial projections.

“Spy”, starring Melissa McCarthy as a deskbound CIA analyst, racked in $1.5 million in its limited showings on Thursday. The film, which also features Jason Statham, Jude Law, Rose Byrne and Miranda Hart, is expected to gross around $12 million on Friday, outpacing Dwayne Johnson’s earthquake disaster “San Andreas”, which went on to make a solid $77.6 million in its debut weekend at domestic box office. The film is eyeing around $25 million weekend with reeling in $7 million on Friday. If it continues at the same pace, it will likely cross the $100 million mark by the end of the weekend.

“Insidious: Chapter 3”, the other latest offering of the week, is trailing behind with a $10 million-plus on Friday. The supernatural horror flick started off with solid $1.6 million pre-showing on Thursday. According to box office forecast, the film could gross $20 to $25 million which will place it on third place this weekend. Insidious: Chapter 3 is the third installment in the Insidious series and a prequel to both of the previous films. The film follows the story of a gifted psychic Elise Rainier who was reluctant to use her abilities initially but agrees to help a teenage girl targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

Warner Bros. “Entourage” nabbed $2 million on Tuesday showings and earned $5.3 million on its opening day. The film adaptation of HBO series hopes to generate more than $20 million over the course of its five day debut. The comedy drama film reunites the cast Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven on the big screen.
