Mo’ne Davis Writes Email Pushing For Joey Casselberry’s Reinstatement

Softball phenom Mo’ne Davis said on SportCenter on Monday she is pushing for the reinstatement of Bloomsburg University baseball player Joel Casselberry, who was suspended after posting an offensive tweet about her.

Davis, the Little League World Series phenom pitcher, made her sentiments known on SportsCenter on Monday, March 23, per an espnW update. Bloomsburg University suspended Casselberry on the same day after he posted an offensive tweet about Davis:

Apparently, Casselberry took exception to Davis starring in an upcoming Disney movie entitled “Throw Like Mo.”

According to Philly.com’s Rob Tornoe, Casselberry’s Twitter account was taken down on Saturday evening. However, screenshots of the controversial tweet “made their way across the Internet, angering and shocking area sports fans.” 

Prior to the deactivation of Casselberry’s Twitter account, he expressed remorse in a written statement obtained by Tornoe:

“An example that one stupid tweet can ruin someone’s life and I couldn’t be more sorry about my actions last night. I please ask you to.

“Forgive me and truly understand that I am in no way shape or form a sexist and I am a huge fan of Mo’ne. She was quite an inspiration.” 

Bloomsburg University posted two tweets about Casselberry’s actions without specifically naming him on March 22:

For her part, Davis told SportsCenter she penned an email to the university asking it reinstate Casselberry, per espnW:

“Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance. I know he didn’t mean it in that type of way. I know people get tired of seeing me on TV. But sometimes you got to think about what you’re doing before you do it. 

“It hurt on my part, but he hurt even more. If it was me, I would want to take that back. I know how hard he’s worked. Why not give him a second chance?”

Philly.com’s Layla A. Jones obtained a copy of the email Davis sent to Bloomsburg University president David L. Soltz on Sunday evening:

“While I admit I was pretty hurt when I read his comments, I felt sad that he was dismissed from the team. I am sure Joey Casselberry has worked very hard to get where he is and dreams of playing in the major leagues. 

“For this reason, I am asking you to please allow him back on the team so that he can continue to chase his dream. He made one dumb mistake. I’m sure he would go back and change it if he could.”

espnW then obtained a statement from Bloomsburg University which says it stands pat on Casselberry’s suspension. “Her request demonstrates the type of person she is, her level of maturity and the empathy that her family and coach tell her,” the statement reads. “Bloomsburg University stands firm on our decision; however, his consequences will be reviewed as is common in disciplinary actions like this.”

Casselberry, a junior first baseman of the Bloomsburg Huskies, holds several offensive records at Methacton High School. The Philly.com update says he was an All-Southeast Pennsylvania honoree. Casselberry also participated in the Carpenter Cup at the Philadelphia Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park and led his high school’s deep run in the Distrcit One Class AAA tournament.
