Netflix announced on Tuesday it will be revealing a new optimization feature for the visually impaired starting with the series ‘Daredevil’.
According to Netflix they have always worked at improving the experience of their members while watching movies and series on the streaming service, which is also available for easy access on different devices. The feature was petitioned by fans and will provide audio description options of its shows.
The first show with the feature will be the Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ as thousands of fans objected the show is about a blind lawyer/ superhero and the character of Daredevil himself would not have been able to watch the show on Change.org appeal.
Netflix listened and in keeping with its commitment Netflix is expanding its accessibility by providing the audio description option of selected streams. The audio description service first began on Tuesday with the critically celebrated series ‘Daredevil’.
Audio description option is basically a narrative which narrates all that is happening on the screen. The narration will include details on aspects such as settings and scenes, costumes, facial expressions of characters and physical actions. The audio description option is equivalent to choosing an audio in another foreign language but for the visually impaired.
Other series to receive the audio narration option in the coming weeks by Netflix include ‘The House of Cards’, ‘Orange is the New Black’, ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘Marco Polo’.
Although the audio description option will first be available only in English by Netflix, gradually the company will work towards introducing the option in other languages for all of its shows and movies.
Netflix has been collaborating with a multitude of people including studios and content owners to increase the availability and quality of the audio description option across a wide range of different devices e.g. smart TV’s, smartphones, tablets etc.
