Today Pebble will unveil its new smartwatch that has likely a color screen.
Pebble will unveil today at 10 am Eastern a new smartwatch. In an email to Pebble owners the company makes the bold claim that “Awesome is Landing.” If the new Pebble smartwatch looks like in the image that leaked yesterday than the statement will need to be changed in “ugly is Landing.”
Pebble Time has been announced
Update: The new Pebble Watch will be unveiled in 1 hour. The place to hang and get rick-rolled by fake and funny Pebble images and wait is on the Reddit Pebble page.
There is still hope that this leaked image is a false track and that the new Pebble looks very different. The rumors say that the new Pebble will have a color ePaper screen and a microphone.
Launched in 2012 on Kickstarter, the current Pebble watch offers features including fitness tracking, sports apps, productivity tools, and thousands of beautiful watchfaces all found in the Pebble appstore. The current Pebble Watch sells for $99 and steel model sells for $199. The functionality of the Pebble Watch is focused on notifications and as companion device for apps on iPhones and Android smartphones. The current model features a monochrome epaper display enabling a 7-day batter life.
The Pebble Steel watch offers the same technology inside a more sophisticated design.
We see Pebble not directly competing with the Apple Watch, but Pebble could become under pressure from Swatch. The Swatch smartwatch will likely have a similar pricing and the Swatch CEO said that battery life is not an issue. This likely means that the Swatch Smartwatch has also an epaper display.
The new Pebble Watch that is maybe called Chromeo will be unveiled on the getpebble site at 10am ET. Pebble displays a countdown on the site since last week. For Pebble smartwatch owners there is an app for that here.
