Pittsburgh Penguins Mocked Philadelphia Flyers For Missing Playoffs Per Ryan White

Philadelphia Flyers right wing Ryan White told NJ.com some Pittsburgh Penguins players mocked the Flyers last week for missing the 2014-15 NHL playoffs.

Ryan White says some Pittsburgh Penguins players mocked his Philadelphia Flyers last week for missing the 2014-15 NHL playoffs.

According to NJ.com’s Randy Miller, White, Philadelphia’s right wing, heard some of the Penguins players poking fun at the Flyers during their game at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh last week. 

When Miller asked White who among the Penguins players jawed with the Flyers, he refused to name names.

“I don’t want to say,” White told NJ.com on Sunday. “I don’t want to get myself in trouble.”

The Flyers beat the Penguins for a fourth time on April 5 to the tune of a 4-1 score at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It was a season sweep White and  Co. savored not just because they beat their in-state rivals, they also put the Penguins on the brink of elimination, per Miller.

White, a first-year Flyer, told NJ.com he is slowly but surely familiarizing himself with the intense Pittsburgh-Philadelphia rivarly:

“It’s my first year being here, but from being here one year, you realize we don’t like the Penguins. It was good to beat them twice in the same week here. That’s the only thing we can play for right now is trying to put a little bit of a damper on other teams’ things.

“You know what, they had a few guys last week saying they’re going to the playoffs and kinda chirping after the game.

“It was just after the game we were gonna be done in a week. Of course we are, but they have a couple stumbles this week and they’re (out), too. Hopefully they’ll keep losing.

“We’ve all probably been on the other side before where we were talking down to the teams that are struggling, but in a rivalry like this you never want to put any extra fuel on the fire and they did.”

Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube downplayed the alleged jawing incident, per NJ.com.

“That stuff always happens on the ice,” Berube quipped. “That’s what happens when you don’t make the playoffs, but I’m sure our players were upset about it and wanted to do something about it for sure.”

Flyers defenseman Nick Schultz told Miller that White probably set the Penguins off. “I’m sure Whitey was probably in there chirping a little bit, too,” he said. “That’s probably why (the Penguins) were saying things.”

Nonetheless, Philadelphia center Sean Couturier took pleasure in seeing Pittsburgh’s playoff chances take a huge hit with another loss on Sunday, per NJ.com:

“I didn’t know (about them), but it sure is motivation to see them slipping down in the standings here. Kinda make their life hard to make the playoffs and maybe they won’t make it. For sure, it was some motivation today for us to beat them and make it harder for them.”

The Flyers’ win on Sunday was highlighted by a spectacular 46-save effort by netminder Steve Mason, securing their eighth straight win over the Penguins dating back to the 2013-14 NHL season, per a separate NJ.com update from Miller. Jakub Voracek, Brayden Schenn, White and Michael Del Zotto scored for Philadelphia. 

Miller stresses the Flyers had to overcome a 22-to-4 deficit on shots on goal during the first period. They were 3-of-5 on power-play opportunities while limiting star Penguins forward Sidney Crosby to zero points on four shots. 

Fans in attendance at Wells Fargo Center rubbed it in when they chanted “You can’t beat us” as the game was about to end, per NJ.com. 

Miller says the Penguins lost their third consecutive game and are just 3-8-1 in their last 12 outings. They can still clinch a playoff spot if they beat the Ottawa Senators in regulation on April 6, says The Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Seravalli. 

The Pittsburgh Penguins (42-26-11) are in a tight race for playoff seeding with the Boston Bruins (41-25-13) and Ottawa Senators (40-26-13), per ESPN. 

On the other hand, the Philadelphia Flyers (32-29-18) have since been eliminated from postseason contention.
