Users will have to make 5 minutes calls in their region before transferring and using it for overseas carriers.

The region lock has been becoming the Samsung thing now. First the spec was featured on the Galaxy Note 3 which came before and now it has been featured on the Galaxy S5. However, the only way to get rid of this regent lock, the users will not only have to simply activate but also make cumulative calls over 5 minutes in their region before transferring and using it overseas carriers.


This lock was detailed in a statement which was issued by Samsung last year in November where it was said that these regent locks are a way to stem grey market imports. These 5 minute calls which are a way to unlock the phone will have to be made by using the SIM card from a carrier from the designated region. About this, the Galaxy S5 box says: “European Model: This product should be activated with a SIM card issued from a mobile operator within Europe. (as defined EU/EEA, Switzerland and the following Non-EEA countries Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M), Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Serbia and Vatican City.) To use SIM cards from other regions, a cumulative call over five minutes must first be made with the SIM card from European operators.”

Here is a list of all the countries which fall under the European Economic Area (EEA): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania , Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK, Switzerland, Croatia.

Some non EEA countries include Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Serbia, Vatican City.
