Samsung has announced its first fitness tracker, the Gear Fit. Check out why it’s cool.

At the jam-packed Mobile World Congress, Samsung made history once again, kicking off its own event with the announcement that it has already sold over 200 million Galaxy S phones since 2010.

The South Korean technology giant also revealed the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the next-generation Galaxy Gear smart watches. But Samsung has clearly outdone itself this time by introducing its first fitness tracker.

Remember the rumors of a fitness-tracking Samsung Galaxy Band that made headlines in December last year? Well, it’s finally here. The Samsung Gear Fit, as it is officially called, promises to be the ultimate modern fitness solution.

The first remarkable attribute of the Gear Fit is its rather curved and small design. A Samsung representative confirmed that it weighs around 27 grams, and has a 23.4mm x 57.4mm x 11.95mm dimension.

It sports a 1.84-inch curved Super AMOLED display that has a 432 x 128 resolution – enough to display details such as a user’s heart rate and other notifications, e.g. email, texts, and calls. Yes, it is built to work with any Galaxy phone or tablet. However, unlike Sony’s fitness gadget, the Gear Fit isn’t compatible with other Android phones. But that won’t be a problem, considering Samsung’s strong brand equity.

The Gear Fit is also equipped with sensors that track exercises. It also works as a pedometer, a stopwatch, and a timer. Users can even use it to track their sleeping habits. Perhaps another selling point is its dust and water-resistant design. And, for the fashion-conscious, the Gear Fit features changeable straps. Users can choose between black, orange, and mocha grey.

Expect these fitness trackers to hit the market in April.

Meanwhile, at the stage earlier today, Samsung CEO JK Shin said that wearables should reflect the diverse interests of consumers.

“In response, our Gear product portfolio continues to expand with unique devices for a wide range of lifestyles, including the new Gear Fit designed to help those consumers striving to live more fit and active lives without sacrificing their own personal style or their ability to stay connected on the go,” Shin added.
