Sony Defends Aloha

Sony film ‘Aloha’ receives backlash from Hawaiian activist for ‘Bastardizing’ a sacred Hawaiian word in cliché Hollywood form.

After the trailer or ‘Aloha’ which stars Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone was released Hawaii native activists took issue with the film. The title of the film along with its interpretation of the Hawaiian culture through the eyes of white people has generated backlash from Hawaiian natives and Asian Americans.

According to Walter Ritte, a Hawaiian native activist, the use of the word ‘Aloha’ as a title for a romantic comedy featuring the military in a movie will definitely end up ‘Bastardizing’ the word. The word ‘Aloha’ is sacred to the natives of Hawaii and its use by Hollywood is not acceptable just for the sale of making copious amounts of money.

Moreover the chairman of the ethnic studies department at the University of Hawaii Ty Kawika Tengan declared the use of the word ‘Aloha’ as a title and the backdrop of Hawaii for the romantic comedy setting is a typical example of Hollywood using the Hawaiian habitation for white dreams.

Sony defended the movie ‘Aloha’ by issuing a statement on Tuesday which declared that while some people have been very quick to judge a movie not even released yet with a script the criticizers have never even read, the film represents the spirit and culture of the people of Hawaii in a very respectful light.

The statement by Sony also stated the director Cameron Crowe has been researching the Hawaiian culture for many months and has even visited many different locations to get a better idea of the local voices. During the process Crowe earned the respect of many community leaders in Hawaii such as Dennis ‘Bumpy’ Kanahele who will also star in the film. 

The film is going to be released on Friday the 29th of /4/and will be screened for critics tonight.
