Sophia Loren Turns 80 Today

The renowned Italian actress, Sophia Loren, turns 80 today. The whole of Italy and Mexico will celebrate the landmark birthday of the legendary actress today.

Sophia Loren, along with her son, is to spend this special day in Mexico City. Actually the Mexican telecommunications tycoon, Carlos Slim, threw a gala dinner in honor of Loren’s 80th birthday.

Carlos Slim is not an ordinary man. He is one of the richest people in the world. He has his own museum in Mexico where he hosted an exhibition with the title “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” This exhibition was held to mark the 80th birthday of cinema icon Sophia Loren.

Sophia Loren has also penned a memoir for her landmark birthday with same name of “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” 

Sophia Loren was born on 20th September, 1934 in Italy. Her original name was Sofia Scicolone. She entered the world of entertainment at the very young age of 14. 

She started her career by taking part in a beauty pageant in 1949. And she won the contest. She was too thin and slim in her teens, that she was given the nickname “toothpick.”

She first met a man who was twenty years older than her at the age of 15. Diector Carlo Ponti became her husband and manager. She married Ponti in 1957. They lived together until the death of Ponti in 2007. Loren became the mother of two. She also won an Oscar for her role in “Two Women.”

Another exhibition of Loren’s photographs is also being held in Milan this week in honor of her 80th birthday. “Sophia Loren – Style Icon” is the title of this exhibition.

Thousands of visitors are attending the exhibition. Anna Torrente is one of them. She said that Sophia Loren is a true legend. “I want to wish her many happy returns. She was lucky in her life but she also made her own way,” said Anna.

Another visitor from Romania, Eli Laslean, told AFP that Sophia Loren is the “most beautiful woman in the world.” And for Laslean, Sophia was her dream princess. We congratulate Sophia Loren on her 80th birthday. /4/God bless her with a long and happy life!
