Super Bowl 2015 Could be Canceled [Update]

Super Bowl 2015 Could be Canceled

There is a risk that the Super Bowl 2015 game will not take place. It is an insurance issue.

The Super Bowl 2015 could be cancelled if the government is not acting. The situation of missing legislation for the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) is gaining attention. BusinessWeek carried a report a couple of days ago detailing the problem.

Update 12/15:
NBC Sports just reported that the NFL said that the Super Bowl will be played despite the insurance issue. The report is though not going into details what “The Super Bowl will be played” means. If there is no insurance they just might play the Big Game without stadium audience and just broadcast it live on TV.

TRIA was established after 9/11 to create a risk-sharing structure between the government and insurers in case of a terrorist attack. The law is set to expire end of this year. Without TRIA in place no insurance company would cover the Super Bowl 2015. This would mean huge financial loss for key players in the Super Bowl including NFL, NBC and many others.

Given the low performance of the House and Senate and the loss of power by the Democrats in the last election the risk is high that the government is not getting a renewal of TRIA done by the end of the year. If TRIA expires, insurers have the right to cancel Terrorism insurance policies.

Insurance Business America has recently reported that the renewal is likely killed in the Senate. Where is this leaving the Super Bowl 2015?
