Running Tizen OS, the Samsung Z features a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display and a 2.3GHz quad-core processor.



Pre-empting Apple’s main event, Samsung unveils its first Tizen-based smartphone today without much funfair. Simply dubbed as the Samsung Z, the phone will be showcased at the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco on June 3.

The Samsung Z has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 screen resolution. Powering the device is a 2.3GHz quad-core processor (prolly a Snapdragon 800 SoC), a 2GB RAM, and up to 64GB of internal memory.

Dimensions are 138.2 x 69.8 x 8.5mm and it tips the scales at 136g. Furthermore, the Samsung Z has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2.1-megapixel shooter on the front.

Other features include LTE Cat 4 support, a 2600mAh battery, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, USB 2.0, IR Remote, and the nifty fingerprint scanner first introduced by Samsung in its Galaxy S5 phablet.

“Value-added features” include Ultra Power Saving Mode, Download Booster, and S Health version 3.0.

According to Samsung’s press release, the Samsung Z will hit Russia first in the third quarter of 2014. Fortunately, Samsung is planning to launch the phone in other markets in the future.

We have yet to witness Samsung’s Tizen OS at work. But Samsung’s DJ Lee said that its Tizen platform will allow users to utilize applications more effectively. The company is also planning to host Tizen app challenges in Russia to improve its young Tizen eco-system.
