Tim Tebow Works Out With Philadelphia Eagles

Free-agent quarterback and current ESPN college football analyst Tim Tebow worked out with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, March 16.

A league source confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter about Tebow’s workout with the Eagles. However, that same source also says the team does not plan to sign the free-agent quarterback.  

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport (via NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus) also confirmed Tebow’s visit with the Eagles on Monday. The Eagles quarterback position is stacked with Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne all on board. Tebow, who was teammates with Sanchez for one season with the New York Jets in 2012, still worked out as a quarterback.

The league will hold its first veteran combine in Arizona on Sunday, March 22. However, Hanzus says Tebow was not invited. Rapoport also confirms the Eagles are not going to dangle him a contract at this point.

The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin reported last week Tom Brady’s personal coach Tom House has been training Tebow for the past two years in Los Angeles in the hopes Tebow will be able to return to the NFL. 

House himself told Volin that he was unsure if Tebow would be at the veteran combine. However, Volin says his client has been making progress. He said Tebow “went from being a little inaccurate and didn’t throw a whole lot of spirals, to throwing very accurate and real good at spinning the ball.” 

House also vouched for Tebow in an exclusive interview with USA Today’s Jim Corbett on March 16:

“If anybody’s going to have an open mind, it’ll be someone like Chip Kelly. Stranger things have happened.

“Tim has been busting his butt on a regular basis for the last couple of years to stay ready for this type of opportunity. He came directly from being released by the Patriots and has been working on a regular basis since then.

“Initially, Tim had trouble spinning the ball and he wasn’t very accurate. That’s fixed. He’s very accurate now.”

ESPN Philadelphia Eagles reporter Phil Sheridan wrote his take on how Tebow would have possibly fit in with the team in his March 16 blog:

“With his running ability, Tebow would seem like a perfect fit for Kelly’s spread offense. However, Kelly’s acquisition of Sanchez and Bradford, along with his commitment to Foles, has dashed assumptions about what Kelly seeks in a quarterback. Tebow would reopen that conversation.

“Kelly likes the challenge of working with different quarterbacks, tweaking his offense to fit their particular skill sets. It would probably be a personal challenge to coax NFL success out of Tebow, especially after Kelly’s friend and role model, Bill Belichick, could not.

“Of course, Kelly’s primary concern is winning games. If he signs Tebow, it would be as competition for Barkley’s No. 3 quarterback job. Kelly could also use Tebow as a change-of-pace player, much as the Jets did in 2012 when Sanchez was their starter. Tebow played in 12 games, throwing eight passes (six were complete) and running 32 times for 102 yards.”

Tebow is currently serving as a college football analyst on ESPN and the SEC Network. The ESPN update says his contract with the latter “does not preclude him from continuing to pursue opportunities in the NFL.” 

The 27-year-old Tebow last took the field three years ago as a member of the Jets. He played his first two seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. He has amassed 3,411 all-purpose yards and 29 touchdowns in 35 career regular-season games, per ESPN stats.
