Tomorrowland and Pitch Perfect 2 Square off for the Top Slot

Both films are going head to head and will likely end up with more than $40 million this weekend

“Pitch Perfect 2” is certainly facing a stiff competition this weekend as the female-powered sequel of 2012 “Pitch Perfect” is finding itself in a close race with Disney’s newly released film “Tomorrowland”. Both are heading towards a tally of $40 million over the weekend and it is difficult to predict which one will end up on the top slot.

Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson, scored $725,000 on its limited opening on Thursday night. The film went on to make $9.7 million on Friday. According to the weekend forecast, the film will put up anywhere from $40 to $43 this weekend.

Pitch Perfect 2 which had an unexpected record-breaking debut weekend of $69.2 million also earned $9.7 million on Friday. This musical sequel is expected to score somewhere around $40 to $43 million till the end of the week which means this weekend is shaping up as a tight contest between Tomorrowland and Pitch Perfect 2. Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson starring film will also achieve the milestone of $100 million at domestic box office this weekend.

“Poltergeist”, also released earlier this week, is currently holding third place in terms of top-grossing films this weekend. The film is the remake of 1982 class horror film of the same name and is produced by Sam Raimi, who is a well known cult horror filmmaker. The film which received C-plus from audience polling firm CinemaScore, earned a solid $9.4 million on Friday and can finish this weekend as high as of $31 million.

Mad Max: Fury Road pulled in $6.7 million this Friday and is likely to end the weekend with $30 to $32 million. Overall, the post-apocalyptic action film has amassed $135 million worldwide which is way too short what was expected from this film initially.

Right at the bottom is Disney’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. The superhero-packed film managed to pull in $5.4 million Friday, in its fourth week and went on to make not more than $30 million this weekend.
