  • Tomorrowland Fails to Earn Expected Memorial Day Opening!

The film ‘Tomorrowland’ tops the long weekend box office with $40.7 million but brings in a low Memorial Day opening earnings!

On Sunday the box office estimates showed the newly released film Tomorrowland leading in earnings. The estimates were mainly based on the North American statistics where ‘Tomorrowland’ is currently on the top but the film has still failed to make its mark.

The film earned $40.7 million according to Box Office Mojo. So even though the film is a hit in North America it has not earned the expected revenues.

‘Tomorrowland’ is a science fiction fantasy drama film starring the Oscar Nominated actor George Clooney in the lead role as a bitter genius trying to find a better place than the one he lives in.

George Clooney playes Frank a once boy genius embarking on a dangerous mission to find the place called Tomorrowland. Other cast members include veteran actors such as the British actor Hugh Laurie and newcomer Britt Robertson. ‘Tomorrowland’ opened in a total of 3972 theatres but only the earnings failed to pass the $41 million mark by a small margin.

However the box office statistics also showed the entire earnings for the Memorial Day weekend were slower than ever before in the year 2015. Landing on second place in the box office was the musical comedy ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ which earned a small $37.9 million in the same Memorial Day weekend.

‘Pitch Perfect 2’ starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson as members of the Barden Bellas singing team was previously a hit but failed to earn impressive earnings over the Memorial Day weekend.

The third place on the box office was secured by the latest instalment of the Mad Max film ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. The statistics also combine earnings from Canada and the overall earnings are not expected to cross the $150 million mark.

Here are the four-day long Memorial Day weekend’s top five at the box office.

1. Tomorrowland — $40.7M million

2. Pitch Perfect 2 — $37.9M million

3. Mad Max: Fury Road — $30 million

4. Poltergeist — $27.7 million

5. Avengers: Age of Ultron — $26.8 million
