Twitter Finally strikes a Deal with Google to show Tweets in Google Search Results

Twitter has struck a deal with Google in order to make its tweets more searchable online.

From this year tweets will be appearing in Google’s search results as soon as they are posted. This is because of a deal between Twitter and Google which basically gives Google access to Twitter’s firehose and the stream of data that is generated by the microblogging service’s 284 million users. Before this deal Google had to crawl Twitter’s site in order to get the information but now thanks to the deal the information will come automatically from Twitter.

The agreement is an addition to the progress that Twitter Chief Executive Officer Dick Costolo is making in getting tweets seen by more non-users and generating more advertising revenue from a larger audience. Moreover before this deal with Google, Twitter also provided information and data to Microsoft Corp’s Bing search service and Yahoo! Inc.

Twitter is now entering more of such deals because the microblogging site aims to draw more people to its site as user growth is slowing. Apart from a deal with Google, Twitter has also announced another deal this week with Flipboard Inc’s mobile application and Yahoo Japan corp. These deals come as shareholders are worried that Twitter /4/not be able to attract as many users as its competitors such as Facebook which currently has five times as many as Twitter’s monthly users.

Some sources have informed that engineers from Twitter and Google have started working on the agreement and it is a matter of time before everything is finalized. We also saw such a deal between the two companies from 2009 to 2011.

Twitter’s former chief officer, Ali Rowghani had been against renewing this agreement in order to keep more control over Twitter’s content but he failed to do so. Will Stickney who is a spokesperson for San Francisco-based Twitter did not provide any comment on the development between the two companies nor did anyone from Google.

It is quite shocking to learn from sources that this deal between Twitter and Google will involve no advertising revenue. This can then only mean one thing, that Twitter will be receiving data-licensing revenue, which was $41 million in the third quarter, up from $16 million a year earlier.

Finally Anthony Noto who is Twitter’s chief financial officer provide us with some information and at the company’s analyst meeting in November stated that the company had been working to make tweets more easier to find through search engines. This he explained can be achieved by negotiating with search providers and could be a unique opportunity for the company to distribute its tweets to more people than before.

Twitter will be revealing its quarterly earnings tomorrow and that will show everyone where the company stands and whether these deals will help it in the coming future or not. However with such deals it seems that the management at Twitter is all geared up for a show.
