Michel Platini said that he personally asked FIFA President Sepp Blatter to resign for the good of the game.
The FIFA is in huge trouble, but FIFA President Sepp Blatter makes no signs to take the consequences. Under his watch corruption bloomed and the arrests of FIFA officials yesterday are supposed just the beginning. Sepp Blatter is up for re-election tomorrow and FIFA is going ahead with the election.
UEFA President Michel Platini just revealed that he personally asked Sepp Blatter to step down earlier today but Blatter refused. Apparently Blatter said that the request had come too late. Whatever that means. I don’t see why he could not announce his resignation any time.
Platini also said in a press-conference that most of the UEFA members will vote for Prince Ali, the only competitor for the FIFA Presidency Blatter is facing.
Michel Platini gets support from UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron who also wants Blatter to step down. He also urges FIFA sponsors to review their links with FIFA and Sepp Blatter. The pressure is clearly mounting, but Sepp Blatter’s support inside FIFA will likely keep him in the President’s position. The only one that can push him out is himself.
Russian President Putin also had something to say. Putin said on a statement published on the Kremlin site that the United States has nothing to do with this. “This is yet another obvious attempt to spread their jurisdiction to other states. I have no doubt that this is obviously an attempt to prevent Mr Blatter’s re-election to the post of FIFA President, which is a grave violation of the principles that international organizations function on.”
He even brought Snowden into the argument about the practices of the United States policing outside of the United States.
