Bentley to show off plug-in hybrid concept car this month

Bentley is a luxury carmaker that has been making big and extremely expensive cars for decades. The automaker is set to show off its first plug-in hybrid car at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition later this month.

The car showing off its plug-in hybrid tech won’t be a production model for the foreseeable future. The first time this hybrid tech will show up will be in a new Bentley SUV that is expected to hit the road in 2017.

The hybrid technology is still a bit of a mystery. All Bentley is saying now is that it will increases power by 25% while reducing CO2 production by 70%. Eventually 90% of Bentley’s cars will have a hybrid option according to the automaker.

The plug-in hybrid tech will allow 50km of electric only driving on a full charge.

“There is no doubt that plug-in hybrid technology is true to Bentley’s values of outstanding luxury and effortless performance. Combining our renowned engines with electric power reinforces and enhances both principles, and so we will gradually introduce this powertrain across our model range. By the end of the decade, at least 90% of our production will be available as a plug-in hybrid. We are proud to be pioneering these developments in the luxury sector.”

The only Bentley not likely to see hybrid tech is the Continental GT Speed aimed at high performance driving.
