The film Beyond the Lights offers a glimpse into the fine art of finding love in a world of hatred. It is a movie on two lovers that face similar issues.
The story line is one of the attraction of opposites due to being immersed in the same environment. According to Guardian, the male happens to save the female in the nick of time before she is about to jump off her flat balcony in a suicidal attempt.
The very moment where he holds her in his arms, they look at each other in surprise and that is where they feel the surety of love in their hearts. Love is after all the strongest of all emotions. The fact that they are in the same basic mess speaks volumes about their later struggles to help each other in the journey to wholeness and healing.
The lady’s character is Noni Jean and she has been set on the fast track to fame since she was four years old by her momager. Meanwhile, the man’s role is that of a police officer Kaz Nicol and he has been under the surveillance of his father who is a hard and cruel man used to having his way.
Both face certain pressures to succeed from their respective parents. That is why they decide to get away from it all (the hair-raising hassle) for awhile. And so they go off to a far off bungalow in a travelogue setting and there they proceed to make sweet love to each other in the most tension-relieving way possible.
Beyond that Noni’s life becomes a living hell due to the tabloids that will not leave her alone or let her live in peace. The movie is a depiction of the price that has to be paid for being a celebrity. Noni’s momager played by Minnie Driver has always kept her on a leash and never allowed her to enjoy any independence. And the movie in a way shows us that Western civilization pampers the body but starves the soul.
The director of the movie was queried regarding the scenes in the movie. She said that she absolutely adored R&B and hip hop music which were the lifeblood of Noni in Beyond the Lights. The director’s sons loved the musical genre too so that helped in the making of the movie.
She said that basically the issue of sexuality in show biz especially the music industry evinced the fact that it all depended on how comfortable one was with one’s freedom. People like Beyonce who were at cloud nine were doing their own thing.
But others such as Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus had to wrest their rights from the jaws of an over-controlling authority whether it be a mom or Disney Studios. It is all a matter of pushing the envelope and reality-testing. Like the accelerator a car you could keep increasing the speed of your sexual relations.
But at some point you had to decide whether you wanted peace or pleasure. You had to pick one of the two. Basically, the thing is overprotective and possessive moms. They can ruin their children by not allowing them their natural emancipation which should be granted when they become teenagers and adults.
While Madonna had a very healthy attitude to sexuality, others such as Marilyn Monroe never got a mother’s love and care and so she committed suicide in the end. The director of Beyond the Lights interviewed several artists for the sake of the movie.
They included Mary J. Blige and Kid Cudi. She said that Mary also spoke of how she once had the urge to take her own life. That is what the music industry can do to you if you are not careful. It builds you up only to tear you down. But then what builds you up also tears you down…that is only natural and to be expected.
As for the black police officer in the movie, he disproves the dictum that black youths don’t fall in love. There was even a member of the audience who saw the movie that said that after seeing it he had changed and was now a better man.
The constant niggling doubts of pop stars is also explored in the film. It shows that beyond the physical issues there are psychological ones to boot. And their solution is not drugs or sex but love!
