- Uber Are Looking To Get Their Hand’s On Nokia’s Here Mapping Service
Uber will try to buy the Nokia Here service from Nokia. This service is Nokia’s digital mapping service.
We all know that Uber is that sort of company one uses to book a taxi while using their cellphones. It looks like the company is thinking big and that it has far broader ambitions. The company is trying to build itself as a logistics company.
Their goal as a company is to deliver people and goods within cities as fast as possible. They are currently relying on Google Maps. It looks like Uber is in no mood to use Google Maps in the future. We’ve heard that Uber has submitted a bid to Nokia so that they can buy their Here service.
The Here service is the only major competitor against the Google Maps. Uber have submitted $3 billion for the acquisition of the Here service. This news came after Nokia announced that they would be willing to sell their business.
Uber has some rivals that also want to get their hand on the project. This includes BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz who are looking to team up with Chinese search engine Baidu. According to NYTimes, another bid of undisclosed fee was also submitted.
There are also rumors that Nokia will sell this service in just a month’s time. Some believe that they will announce the sale of their mapping service by the end of May. Negotiations are still underway and there is a good possibility that the talks might not lead to a deal.
All of the parties that are involved in the deal have declined to comment on the topic. We now know how important a mapping service is when we are seeing a multi-billion bidding war between companies.
Microsoft and Facebook showed interest in the past to buy the Nokia mapping service but there was never a breakthrough in talks. Some major companies in the world use mapping services from other companies and this is why they prefer that they own a mapping service rather than rely on other company’s data.
