  • Survey of 170,000 adults
  • Android most popular OS

80% Of All Online Adults Now Own A Smartphone, Less Than 10% Use Wearables

At the time of the advent of the smartphone industry, there were tons of new things which had to be experimented with but the newly found wearables industry, it seems that it has already started to saturate because only a limited number of things which can be done with the smartwatches and consumers are already losing interest. But if people are looking up to the Apple smartwatch to spark some consumer interest then apple has surely a lot of work to do.

New research out from the GlobalWebIndex has revealed that according to a survey conducted on 170,000 adult internet users across 32 markets, only 9 percent of them reported having a smartwatch and 7 percent has wristbands. But out of these, 80 percent owned a smartphone. The smartphones have been around for a very long time and their share is much larger but it still hasn’t reached a legacy high as the PCs have which are at 91% of all online adults.

Mentioned below are some other interesting findings from the research;

• As far as the wearables are concerned, most of the device owners are males in the 25-34 year-old group who live in the Asia Pacific region. This shows that these products are catering to a niche market and still have enough scope to appeal to a wider range of consumers.

• The survey on mobile OS shows that Android remains to be the most favored one on the tablets and smartphones and has gotten way ahead of the iOS. Though we heard that Apple iPhone sales had increased tremendously but the data displayed by GWI doesn’t clearly support this idea.

• Apple and its iPads remain to be the most popular ones in the tablet sector but as far as the platform dominance is concerned, Apple hasn’t been in a leadership position since Q4 2011, and really dropped away from a close position in 2013.
