Xiaomi teases a smaller version of its 49-inch Mi TV 2 Smart TV.

Xiaomi, the third largest phone manufacturer in the world and the number one in China, has announced a modified version of its bestselling smart TV. The new Xiaomi Mi TV 2 has been downsized from the original model launched last year, from 49-inches to 40-inches. The older Mi TV 2 (both models have the same name) also drops the 4K screen in favor of a 1080p display, which explains the cheaper price.

The new TV retails for RMB 1,999 or around $322 in China on March 31st. Of course, there’s always the option to get the 49-inch model with a 4K resolution. But you’ll have to pay around $670 for it. Those living in the United States, however, cannot buy either of the two TVs, at least for now. Xiaomi is expected to begin selling its products (excluding mobile devices) in the U.S. later this year.

Apart from its full HD LED display from Sharp, the Xiaomi Mi TV 2 is powered by an MStar 6A908 Cortex-A9 quad-core processor clocked at 1.45GHz, a Mali-450 MP4 4+2-core GPU, a 1.5GB DDR3 RAM, 8GB of external storage, and Xiaomi’s Android-based OS: MIUI. The Smart TV is able to play H.265, H.264, MPEG4, REAL video compressions and file formats like RM, FLV, MOV, AVI, MKV, TS, and MP4. Those who are looking for an affordable Smart TV will find the Mi TV 2 valuable. Our only hope is for Xiaomi to sell this TV here in the U.S.
