U2: “Sorry about that.”
U2 is Sorry for Giving Away Free Album on iTunes
U2, one of the most iconic bands in history, is sorry for giving away free music on iTunes. In what seemed like a marketing gimmick, U2 struck a deal with Apple to offer the band’s latest album, Songs Of Innocence, for free. The problem started when Apple started downloading the album on everyone’s account. Fans took to social media to complain about the unwanted gift. Overall, Songs Of Innocence was downloaded 26 million times, according to Apple’s Eddy Cue.
It didn’t take long for Apple to release a tool that allowed users to delete the record. Now the band is speaking about the mishap for the first time. In a newly-released video on Facebook, Bono, The Edge, Adam, and Larry answered a flurry of questions, one of which is seeking to understand why the band decided to release the album on iTunes.
The atmosphere shifted and Bono sighed and said “oops.” The 54-year old frontman then said sorry, adding that the band got carried away with the idea of giving away a free album. Bono also admitted that there was self-promotion involved. It was a drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity, and a dash of self-promotion, Bono said. You can check out the video below.
