Australian Open 2015: Serena Williams beats Muguruza to play against Cibulkova

Serena Williams faces Cibulkova in the Australian Open 2015 quarterfinal.

Serena Williams of the United States celebrates who has been known in the tennis world since 1990’s. This particular match is her comeback at the Australian Open 2015. At the age of 33, there is no slowing down, Serena Williams is pushing for her 19th grand slam title this year at the Australian Open 2015, and looking for her 6th Australian Open trophy as well.

This win over Muguruza gets her one step closer to seeing that happen. The last time Serena went past to the quarter finals in Melbourne Park was in 2010. 

Serena Williams wins a place in the Australian Open 2015 over Garbine Muguruza, with 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2. Not any easy feat. Serena had to fight for each round, never relaxing and staying on her toes to ensure that she made it through to the Australian Open 2015 quarter finals.  

Muguruza was a tremendous opponent making Serena Williams work for the win for a place in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2015. The two competitors have a history, which spans over years Williams was defeated by Muguruza in 2014 at the French Open.

Serena Williams, she commended on the Spaniard’s ability of getting every ball back. According to Serena Williams she didn’t miss anything. The year before in 2013 Serena Williams took the Australian Open title. 

This year Serena Williams prevailed against the Venezuelan competitor, taking the win in the Australian Open 2015. It wasn’t an easy win the top seed was challenged with every shot by the 24th seed. She matched Serena Williams in heavy hitting rallies, making Serena work hard for every rally that she won. 

Serena seemed to be laboring during the match, coughing and trying to catch her breath, and apparently she has been fighting a cold and hasn’t been feeling well. Her service seemed to be struggling during the first set also and she was unable to convert her six break-point chances. The Spaniard on the other was attacking converting her six break point chances twice. 

The number 1 ranking Serena Williams started picking up the power in the second set and showing the reason why Serena Williams is number 1.  With renewed energy Serena Williams took over the remainder of the match making it hers. 

Even with the win, Serena Williams showed great respect for her opponent, commenting that the Spaniard was pounding the ball really, and really hard making her work for each set that she won.  

Serena Williams will now face Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 10th seed that beats Azarenka for a place in the quarter finals which will be played on Monday.

Cibulkova was the runner up at last year’s Australian Open, where Li Na won the final. She will be a tough competitor, what she lacks in height she makes up for in strength and energy, she has unseated 44 players and now she has beaten two time champion Azarenka to make it to the quarter finals at the Australian Open 2015.
