Malcom Subban Training With Bruins Until Svedberg Returns From Providence

The Boston Bruins have announced on their website that Malcom Subban will be practicing with the NHL squad. The announcement was actually implemented on Friday where Subban was spotted training with other players.

This is the first time for Subban to train in an NHL team. He is actually in Boston to fill the gap that was left by Niklas Svedberg after he was deployed to Providence Bruins for the purpose of conditioning.

From the look of things, Subban’s recall and Svedberg deployment creates a win-win situation. While Svedberg will be away building his game in Providence, Subban will learn a lot by rubbing shoulders with the big boys. In fact the learning has just begun for the pro player and though he can not stay longer than March, he will have utilized the opportunity to improve his performance.

“Just try to take a professional approach and get myself ready for practice and practice hard and try hard every shot,” said Subban, of his approach to the callup. “And just be ready in case anything happens. When you’re up here, anything can happen, so I’m just trying to stay focused right now and practice hard.

Svedberg has only played in 12 matches where he got 12 appearances, a 2.22 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. On the other hand, head coach Claude Julien stated that it was necessary to include Svedberg in the big team because he needs to be ready for the upcoming season.

“The main reason was to give Sveddy some games here. He’s only played two in the last month or so,” Head Coach Claude Julien said following Friday’s practice. “It’s important – we have a pretty tough stretch coming up. We need him to be at his best and so we need him to get some games in, so that’s the main purpose.”

“And right now as we speak, it’s supposed to be just a weekend thing, which could change along the way. So that’s the reasoning behind it.”

“Obviously the plan is for me to just stay the weekend and we’ll see what happens,” Subban said.

Subban argued that the experience of training with NHL players was quite thrilling despite the fact that his presence is only for a limited period.

“Obviously it’s a great opportunity and I’m honored to be here right now and pretty excited I got the call,” said a smiling Subban, sitting in the Bruins’ locker room for the first time since training camp. “Pretty big surprise but I’m happy right now.”

“Anytime a player gets called up, especially if it’s your first one, you’re really excited and just trying in as much as you can,” he added. “It’s a little different from exhibition and training camp, so I’m just trying to stay focused right now and practice as well as I can.”

Subban knows that the thrill of being in the big league can carry him away. The 21 year old star argued that he is focused on learning many things during his short stay. The star is hoping that an opportunity to play in the NHL will one day come calling and he wants to be ready for it.

“You get your first callup, you’re so overwhelmed by everything you know, but you just try to stay focused and do as much as you can and try and practice hard,” he said. “So that’s what I’m doing right now.”

Subban has proved that he is a very reliable goal tender after allowing just three goals to slip past him on 91 shots in three starts last week, going 2-1-0 with a 0.99 goals-against average and a .967 save percentage. As a matter of fact, the star is close to being crowned the CCM/AHL player of the week.
