John Stewart on Trevor Noah

The current host of “The Daily Show” responds to criticism of his replacement.

Almost immediately after Trevor Noah was announced as Jon Stewart’s replacement on The Daily Show, there was backlash on Twitter and Facebook about some of his past tweets that were offensive to Jewish people, “fat” women, and women in general. The bumpy start was difficult, but Comedy Central stood by their man, and now so is John Stewart. He began Monday night’s show by addressing “the elephant in the room” and the “large kerfuffle” that happened during the last few days. In Jon’s traditional style, he tried to downplay any of the backlash and made everyone laugh.

He mentioned his own struggles with public opinion, expertly pointing out that, at times, he was ridiculed as well.

“Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect… or not,” he said, with a hint of his infamous grin. “Just as I earned your trust and respect… or did not. Or sometimes earned it and then lost it. And then kind of got it back.

He then took on a somber note: “I do hope you give him an opportunity to earn that trust and respect because my experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual, and man, I think, you give him that time, and it’s going to be well worth it,” he added. “I’m excited for where he’s going to take the thing. And I’m going to watch.”

Though there hasn’t been a timeline released about Jon’s departure, his contract does run out at the end of 2015. Many have speculated that Noah will slowly come in and be a presence on the show before Stewart’s departure.
