Matthew Weiner revealed all about the final scenes of Mad Men and also spoke regarding the demise of the character of Betty on the show.

With the season finale scene of Mad Men that showed a Coke commercial along with a smile playing on the lips of Don Draper, many thought it was the end alright. But Matthew Weiner explained to EW about the ins and outs of whether the show must go on or fold its tents and leave.

For one thing, he is content with the ending. The fact that there is a sense of purpose and meaningfulness in the drama means that it is satisfying in its final scenes. Of course, you cannot win them all so Weiner says that he just did his best and left the rest to God.

As for the Coke ad, it was part gimmick and part tongue-in-cheek ironic statement by the likes of Don Draper. Yet it was never meant to be maudlin in its delivery. Matthew thinks that those who found it that way have a deficit in their lives.

He points out the fact that once upon a time there were no commercials that featured mixed races together. However, today just the opposite was happening which was a source of optimism and hope.

As for Betty, she was a gone case right from the start. Especially after her mother’s death, she too had to go since she had no function left to fulfill. The haphazard nature of life is shown via the dying scene of Betty who has lived out her life for what it was worth. The tying in of Betty’s demise with Pete’s role in the series was something that had to be managed with tact.

Weiner mentioned the feelers sent out to gauge the responses of the audience. He spoke of how they wanted to be shocked and scared out of their wits end by the actors and actresses on screen. The humdrum and normal fare just didn’t satisfy them at all.

Don Draper resembled Tricky Dick or Richard Nixon. He /4/have the looks of a Kennedy but it is that crook Nixon he actually resembles in his behavioral economics. Don can sell a comb to a bald man. That is why he is so good in his field!

Weiner meanwhile has other rosier pastures to look forward to after Mad Men. There are many things he has his mind set on. And once he has his mind set on something, he accomplishes that goal no matter what!
