For people who are signed up for Prime, same day delivery /4/be an option.

Amazon is giving many people yet another reason to sign up for Prime. The online retailer is now offering free same day delivery for members, dropping that $5.99 fee that it previously charged for the service. Of course, there are quite a few limitations to the new program, because same day delivery wouldn’t be possible for everyone. The program is only open to about 1 million items (around 20 million items are covered by the free two-day delivery options), and is restricted to only 14 metro areas.

Orders have to be over $35 and be placed before noon.

Amazon is excited to offer the free same-day shipments thanks to their recent investments in fulfillment centers and warehouses that store the products. “We can get items closer to customers, get more items in stock and be able to deliver as quickly as possible,” Chris Rupp, vice president of Amazon Prime, told CNET. Though the percentage is small for now, Amazon hopes to grow the option to include many more of its 30-40 million customers in the United States.

While the company hasn’t released the statistics for how many Prime members do exist, the number keeps growing as more and more people are doing a majority of their shopping online. Some researchers even predict that half of the US population could be signed up for the $99 service by 2023. The service also offers free access to music and videos. The service is also looking at offering one-hour deliveries and expanding their delivery to groceries and baked goods.

Other companies have been following in Amazon’s services, including Walmart and eBay. However, no one has truly been able to rival the company yet – especially in the eyes of customers.
