Analyst reveals Apple Watch spec

According to an analyst who has closely observed the Apple iWatch, there is nothing too spectacular about the smartwatch. The information gathered by Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company tells us that the watch only sports a 512MB RAM which is from Samsung, Micron and Hynix and there is 4 GB of DRAM on board. The analyst has also claimed that the chips are flowing in from some major NAND suppliers and it has been confirmed by Apple Insider. The iWatch is also going to feature a wireless combo chip much like Broadcom’s BCM43342 used in the iPhone 5S.

There is GPS functionality on the original chip but we remember Apple claiming that GPS functionality would only be with a phone tether. The NFC feature on the iWatch is only going to work with Apple Pay for now and apart from all this, the iWatch features a MEMS sensor, wireless charging from Device Technology and a few other bits and pieces.

However, Arcuri’s note should also have included S1 System-on-Chip which remains to be quite discretionary till this point and little is known about it. This is Apple’s first smartwatch SoC and ships in a tiny module fully encased in resin. Apple is the first in the market to design and build a dedicated smartwatch SoC and we are suspecting this is also going to give him an upper hand when it comes to power efficiency.
