Apple Confirms New Apple TV

Apple leaks in a new support document for HomeKit that there will be a new Apple TV.

Apple is expected to unveil a new Apple TV hardware next Monday at the WWDC 2015. Apple has now indirectly confirmed that there will be a new Apple TV. In a new support document for HomeKit, Apple says that you can control your Homekit enabled accessories when you are away from your home with an Apple TV.

The document reads: “if you have an Apple TV (3rd generation or later) with software version 7.0 or later, you can control your HomeKit-enabled accessories when you’re away from home using your iOS device.”

The current Apple TV is the 3rd generation. So the “later” references a new upcoming Apple TV. It is interesting to learn that HomeKit works with the current Apple TV hardware and does not require the 4th Generation Apple TV.

The new Apple TV hardware is supposed to bring the ability to have apps running like on an iPhone. It might be that the 3rd generation Apple TV can be upgraded to support that too.

Apple has also published a complete list of all Homekit accessories. Right now only four manufacturers have announced Homekit enabled devices including Elgato, iHome, Insteon and Lutron.

I am personally interested in theĀ iHome Control Smart Plug iSP5. I will get one to automatically switch on my espresso maker. I will be lying in bed and remotely switch it on and doze 10 more minutes until the machine has heated up to make me my morning cappuccino.
