Apple managed to get the message across that they want consumers to buy the Apple Watch online.
Apple managed through various means to push consumers to buy the Apple Watch online instead of lining up at Apple Store locations. How did they do it? By asking costumers to make an appointment and by telling them each appointment takes 15 minutes. This alone turned many people off from visiting a store. It is a hassle and also communicates between the lines that this is a slow process that does not work at launch day.
Additionally an internal email from Angela Ahrendt, Apple Senior Vice President of Retail, that got widely published said that Apple Store personal is advice to push customers to order online and that there are no walk-ins accepted.
As reported earlier today when the Apple Watch pre-order launched, many Apple Watch models have been delayed from the start. Initially showing a shipping time frame of 4-6 weeks. An hour later many models showed a shipping date of June. Now 10 hours all Apple Watch models show June as shipping time and select Apple Watch Edition models even show July. This means the initial production of the Apple Watch is completely sold out.
This looks even worse than an iPhone launch at the moment. Apple is though often very conservative with shipping time frames and things can still change for the good.
I have ordered an Space Gray Apple Watch Sport within the first 5 minutes and the shipping time giving in the confirmation email is /4/12 to /4/26. That is a pretty rough target. It seems Apple does not have a very good handle on how many Apple Watches they can make until when.
Apple Watch introduces a new design and iOS-based user interface created specifically for a smaller device. Apple Watch features the Digital Crown, a new way to scroll, zoom and navigate fluidly, without obstructing the display. The Digital Crown also serves as the Home button and a quick way to access Siri. The Retina display on Apple Watch features Force Touch, a technology that senses the difference between a tap and a press, providing a new way to access controls within Apple Watch apps.
The Apple Watch introduces the Taptic Engine and a built-in speaker that together discreetly enable an entirely new vocabulary of alerts and notifications you can both hear and feel. Apple custom-designed its own S1 SiP (System in Package) to miniaturize an entire computer architecture onto a single chip. Apple Watch also features Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 4.0 to pair seamlessly with your iPhone. Besides the smart watch features the Apple Watch keeps time to within 50 milliseconds of UTC, the universal time standard when synching regularly with the iPhone.
The Apple Watch starts at $349 for the small case (38mm) Sport Edition. The Apple Watch Pre-order started on April 10 at 12:01am PDT in 9 countries (Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK and the US) and the Apple Watch ships on April 24.
