Bo Pelini Insults Nebraska AD in Profanity-Laced Meeting

New Youngstown State Penguins head football coach Bo Pelini insulted University of Nebraska athletics director Shawn Eichorst during a profanity-laced tirade in his last meeting with Cornhuskers football players on Dec. 2.

Now it can be said: Bo Pelini does not look up to University of Nebraska athletics director Shawn Eichorst.

Youngstown State hired Pelini to be its head football coach on Dec. 17. Pelini previously coached the Nebraska Cornhuskers, whom he had a last team meeting with at Lincoln North Star High School on Dec. 2. During that meeting, he let loose a barrage of profanity-laced insults directed at Eichorst, per Dirk Chatelain of The Omaha World-Herald.

The Omaha World-Herald obtained an audio tape of the meeting. Chatelain described Pelini’s disposition as mainly subdued, thanking his players for all that they have done. He also dispensed some advice to them. However, the majority of his speech was a rant directed at Eichorst:

“A guy like (Eichorst), who has no integrity, he doesn’t even understand what a core value is. He hasn’t understood it from the day he got here. I saw it when I first met with the guy. 

“To have core values means you have to be about something, you have to represent something that is important to you. He’s a f—— lawyer who makes policies. That’s all he’s done since since he’s been here: Hire people and make policies to cover his own a–.

“I didn’t really have any relationship with the A.D. The guy, you guys saw him (Sunday), the guy is a total p—-. I mean, he is. He’s a total c—.”

The University of Nebraska issued a statement about the incident on its official athletics website on Wednesday. The university says it received a transcript of Pelini’s alleged meeting with the Cornhuskers football players which it cannot authenticate at the moment.

Should Pelini’s words prove to be true, the school expressed its disappointment in the press release. It goes on to say “it only reaffirms the decision that he should no longer be a leader of young men at Nebraska.” The university describes Pelini’s actions as “unprofessional” and “disrespectful.” Moreover, the University of Nebraska says his behavior was one of the reasons why it dismissed him as its head football coach on Nov. 30.

University of Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman did not comment on the Pelini incident, per Chatelain. Pelini is due a $7.9 million buyout. 

The Omaha World-Herald report says Pelini told the Cornhuskers he noticed disappointment among members of Nebraska administration after the Cornhuskers beat the Iowa Hawkeyes in the season finale. Pelini claims they didn’t want Nebraska to win. Eichorst called him into his office the day after to inform him of his dismissal, assuring Nebraska would honor the contracts of Pelini and his staff.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, this marks the second time Pelini has been recorded spewing profanity. The first incident was in Sept. 2013 when the website Deadspin uploaded an audio of Pelini calling out Cornhuskers fans and media after Nebraska beat the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2011.

This is in sharp contrast to his introductory press conference at Youngstown State on Dec. 17, when he praised university administration and president Jim Tressel, per ESPN. He said, “I believe I have a great situation here, have a tremendous athletic director, have a president who understands football, who’s going to support me, something that I don’t know if I’ve ever had.”

Rittenberg describes it as a “veiled reference” to Perlman. 

Pelini went 67-27 (.713) in seven seasons with the Cornhuskers. He led them to three conference championship games, but failed to win at least one, per Chatelain.
