Consumer Reports: iPhone 6 Plus is Stronger than the iPhone 6

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Apple‘s iPhone 6 Plus. Following the bendgate issue that propelled adefensive response from Apple, and after hearing rumors that Unbox Therapy’s video was reportedly faked, here we are with an even more accurate test from the respectable folks at Consumer Reports.

Glenn Derene, the electronics editor at Consumer Reports, pitted the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6 together with other Android phones including the HTC One M8, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and the LG G3. And, to make it more interesting, they added the iPhone 5 to the mix.

The test answers the question: “How much force does it take to actually bend a phone?” The six phones were  meticulously tested using Instron’s compression test machine. The test started with 10 pounds of force for 30 seconds. Then they added 10-pound increments until the phones gave in.

Interestingly, the HTC One M8 and the iPhone 6 bended first at just 70 pounds. Then followed the iPhone 6 Plus which took more punishment at 90 pounds. Next are the iPhone 5 and the LG G3 which gave in when 130 pounds of force was applied. The winner is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, taking 150 pounds of force before bending in.

Meanwhile, Unbox Therapy has posted another video bending a new iPhone 6 Plus again. This time, he did it in front of a group of bystanders. And, you guessed it, the iPhone 6 Plus bended. Again. Perhaps, it’s time to close this case. Who would intentionally bend their phones anyway?
