Darren Helm’s Girlfriend Gives Birth To Baby Girl In Car

Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm’s girlfriend, Devon Englot, gave birth to their daughter Rylee Klaire Helm in the backseat of Helm’s Audi early Monday morning.

Darren Helm’s daughter was born in his card early Monday morning. 

According to The Detroit Free Press’ George Sipple, Rylee Klaire Helm was born inside her dad’s Audi at 2:15 a.m. on March 23. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces. She was delivered a week ahead of schedule and just five minutes away from the hospital. 

It was a typical Sunday evening for Helm’s family. He, his girlfriend Devon Englot and their three-year-old daughter, Reece. Helm told Sipple he was asleep by 11 p.m. as he was tired after the Red Wings’ overtime game against the St. Louis Blues that day:

“I didn’t really have a chance to think about it until after. I mean, during, I was petrified. But things ended up working out great. 

“She (Englot) kind of woke me up and said things were happening real fast. It came on so quick, we thought we’d have some time to get to the hospital, and things just took a turn.”

Helm and Englot made their way to Providence Park Hopsital in Novi, Mi. — a 20-mile drive from their house. Englot told Helm she felt the baby was about to come out. The Red Wings forward was on the phone talking to hospital staff all throughout. Englot “delivered the baby in the backseat by herself,” says Sipple.

It was anything but easy. The Detroit Free Press update says Englot had to scream in pain during the ordeal and was afraid they would not make it to the hospital in time. Helm gave Englot credit for bringing baby Rylee Klaire intot the world.

He dubbed what she did as “remarkable,” per Sipple:

“It was all her. All by herself. It was just me in the car with her. She was able to take care of business. It was very remarkable and incredible.

“It was pretty intense. Extremely proud of what (Devon) did, the courage and pain she had to go through — it’s amazing how she did that. I’m so proud of her.”

Helm made it in time for the Red Wings’ morning skate on Tuesday. He told Sipple he planned to bring Englot and their new daughter home before he takes the ice against the Arizona Coyotes that evening:

“It will be the first time she’s home. Everybody’s so happy. It’s such a great feeling…Even my daughter, she’s just so happy and excited to be a big sister and helping her out.”

The Detroit News’ Ted Kulfan spoke with Dearborn, Mi. obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Peter Stevenson, who describes Helm and Englot’s experience as “very unusual”:

“Very unusual. Every so often you might hear about a family with many kids who didn’t get to the hospital quick enough because they were taking care of the kids at home.

“But that’s just not very common. You usually have some time. It’s not the norm.” 

Stevenson also told Kulfan delivering a baby in a hospital is still the best way to go. “A lot safer,” he quipped. “In case something does go wrong, if there are complications, obviously you want to be around a room full of professionals.”

In the end, Helm says the thrill of experiencing his daughter’s birth inside his car couldn’t compare to the Stanley Cup Finals games he’s played in, per The Detroit News. 

“By far,” Helm tells Kulfan. “I mean, you have a woman in the back screaming to ‘get me to the hospital’ and yelling the baby is coming out. It was pretty intense.”

The 28-year-old Helm has amassed 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points in 64 regular-season games for Detroit this season, per ESPN stats.
