Universal Pictures Chairman announces Fifty Shades Darker will be more of a thriller!

Donna Langley the Chairman of the Universal Pictures studio recently sat down at the Hollywood Reporter’s ninth annual Power Lawyers breakfast. At the event in the question & Answer section with THR executive editor Matthew Belloni, Langley shared her thoughts on building strong franchises such as the ‘Fifty Shades’ and ‘Fast & Furious’.

Universal studio’s most recent hits are Fifty Shades of Grey and Furious 7 which recently crossed the $1 billion mark.

According to Langley maintaining the momentum of a franchise is harder than picking up new franchises from the ground, without owning the intellectual property rights like other Hollywood studios. Langley shared how the Universal Studios had learnt from its failures and honed its skills from little projects leading to its recent success.

When asked about the sequel Fifty Shades Darker to the commercially successful first installment Langley spoke on the creative tensions which occurred on the set.

During the filming of Fifty Shades of Grey the author E .L. James and the director Sam Taylor-Johnson had numerous clashes on the way the film was being made, which prompted the director to quit and she will not be returning for the second installment.

Langley addressed the issue by saying for the records the film came out exactly as the type of film the director and the studio wanted to make. Langley then described the sequel Fifty Shades Darker as more of a thriller than as a simple romance movie.

Langley also talked about the recent hiring of Niall Leonard the husband of E. L. James who will be writing the screenplay for the sequel. Leonard had apparently written a draft for the first film but was not credited and the studio was impressed with his job.
