Controversial episode was shocking for the director when he read the script

If you have ever watched an episode of Game of Thrones, you know that the show isn’t shy about sex or death. The episode that aired last weekend was one of the most shocking for many people and director Alex Graves has opened up about the episode with ABC News.

The controversial scene comes in where Cersei is mourning her dead son, Joffrey, when her brother, and lover, Jamie comes in. Jamie makes overtures towards her, which are rebuked and he eventually rapes her next to the dead body of their son.

Graves has opened up about the episode. “The whole thing for me was about dead Joffrey (played by Jack Gleeson) lying there, watching the whole thing,” Graves told THR. “I wanted to make sure I had Jack in there as much as I could. Of course Lena and Nikolaj laughed every time I would say, ‘You grab her by the hair, and Jack is right there,’ or ‘You come around this way and Jack is right there.’ “

Graves talked a bit about why the dead Joffrey was so important to the scene. He said, “He is their first born. He is their sin. He is their lust, and their love — their everything.”

He also said, “You read the scene and go, ‘Wait, who’s directing this?’. I’m never that excited about going to film forced sex.”

He also talks about what’s next for the series, “Episode three is in part an aftermath episode, where you settle and everything takes a turn toward the second half of the season, whether it’s Castle Black, where the battle is coming and they realize they are going to have to do something. Episode three is actually a series of really beautifully written scenes that smartly ends with Meereen, which is the beginning. You have all these beautiful scenes to play out, and then you get a big smashing end to the episode, which is like the opening sequence of a movie as the end. Three is really setting up the last three episodes of the season.”
