Google allegedly working on a tablet with 3D capabilities

A WSJ report says that Google is planning to manufacture 4,000 tablets under Project Tango.

Google introduced its Project Tango smartphone in February this year. Although the concept is a moonshot, the phone did manage to turn a few heads.

The prototype was praised for its 3D computing capabilities that were Kinect-like. Slashgear did a neat hands-on with the phone in March, in case you’d like to learn more about it.

But according to the Wall Street Journal, Google is also working on a tablet version.

Sources with knowledge of Google’s plans told WSJ that around 4,000 tablet prototypes will be created and sent to developers next month. Details are scarce, but the tablet will allegedly sport a 7-inch screen, infrared depth sensors, and two rear cameras that will capture three-dimensional images.

It’s worth noting that Amazon is also rumored to be developing a smartphone with 3D capabilities.

While the idea sounds cool, the real challenge here is to convince the average consumer. For now, Google is relying on developers to work on applications that will cater to the needs of its users.

IDC analyst Bryan Ma commented that developers will play a huge role in the success of the project.

“It is critical to open the new technology to developers first as the key is how you can translate the technology into practical applications,” he told WSJ.
