The experts at DisplayMate have tested the new iPhone 6 Plus display. While it is impressive, it is not the best smartphone display on the market. Samsung is in the lead. Is it time for Apple to switch to OLED?
iPhone 6 Plus Has Not the Best Smartphone Screen
The iPhone 6 Plus has the best LCD smartphone screen says a new report from DisplayMate. This headline has Apple fans cheering, but the important qualifier here is LCD. The experts at DisplayMate still deem the new OLED screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 the best smartphone screen they ever tested.
Quote: “We recently gave the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 our overall Best Smartphone Display award, and for the time being that continues for all of the reasons originally mentioned there.
In particular, for implementing Color Management to provide multiple Color Gamuts, and then using the Color Management to provide the Highest Absolute Color Accuracy for Standard (sRGB/Rec.709) consumer content of any Smartphone or Tablet display that we have ever measured (in one of its four available screen modes, which many reviewers seem to overlook).”
Does this mean that it is time for Apple to switch to OLED screen technology in the iPhone 7 to be able to claim the best smartphone screen on the market again?
DisplayMate sees the improvements of next generation displays in screen readability in ambient light through implementing automatic real-time modification of the display’s Color Gamut and Intensity Scales based the measured Ambient Light level. This can be done on OLED and LCD.

The iPhone 6 Plus is still shipping with a delay of 3 to 4 weeks from the Apple Store. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will go on sale on October 17.
Apple has just released new TV ads for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus titled “Huge” and “Cameras.” It is again narrated by Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon. Watch the two new ads below.
